Councillors from the Socialist Municipal Group attended the reading of the manifesto for International LGBTQ+ Pride Day at Torrevieja City Hall. The position of the local PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party) has been disseminated on social media in a video in which the spokesperson, Bárbara Soler, states that “this manifesto, although correct, falls short when it comes to highlighting the problems that LGBTQI+ people face every day, especially in places like Madrid or the Valencian Community.”
In the aforementioned video, Soler echoes the complaints of LGBTQI+ phobia that a large number of LGBTQI+ associations and organisations throughout the community have made against the Valencian PP, because this party, in collusion with VOX, has chosen the path of discrimination and an attack on the plurality and diversity of society. Examples include the cuts in the area designated to promote municipal educational, awareness-raising, and anti-hate campaigns against the community, as well as the legislative changes that seek to cover up conversion therapies and constitute an attack on the freedoms of trans people.
The video ends with a message addressed to the Mayor of Torrevieja, who, as representative of our city in the Spanish Parliament, has always voted in favour of measures that curtail the rights of this community. While the PSOE has always maintained a firm commitment to achieving real equality, the PP always positions itself against the creation of each and every LGBTQ+ right, even though they then try to shut down the debate by raising a flag and organising a party. But, in reality, the only right they are interested in for LGBTQ+ people is the right to vote.
