Benidorm City Council has completed the work that began a month and a half ago to increase the number of niches at the Sant Jaume Cemetery. The enlargement specifically included the construction of a module with 40 niches on one side, divided into four levels with ten niches per level, and finished in the same manner as the previous ones.
The job primarily consisted of erecting a foundation slab to serve as the niches’ basis, building them with modular tunnel-type formwork, and painting the sides with exposed brick and stone. Curved ceramic tiles cover the module’s sloping roof, while stamped concrete was used for the perimeter paving.
Mayor Toni Pérez paid a visit to the building site this morning, noting that it “will guarantee the burial of the deceased in Benidorm until a larger project is undertaken in a few months to significantly increase the cemetery’s capacity.” Pérez also emphasised creating awareness among family members, stating that “we are avoiding aggravating the grief caused by the loss by not being able to bury the deceased in the manner desired by the family.”
This project required an investment of €41,633.99
Accessibility modifications have also been completed on several streets in the cemetery, including three that now have a single platform to assist individuals with limited mobility. This platform was also created using stamped concrete. This intervention is part of a larger renovation that was included in the prior cemetery expansion.
