A man was arrested by the National Police in Alicante for allegedly robbing a tobacco shop with a knife-like plastic weapon.
The proprietor of a neighbouring tobacco shop alerted a patrol from the National Police’s Citizen Assistance Group, which was performing foot patrols in central Alicante to prevent robberies and thefts, according to a Police Headquarters statement.
Someone had just robbed him of his entire day’s earnings with a black knife. The victim pointed to a middle-aged man dressed in black who was fleeing the institution.
The officers tracked the suspect on foot through the streets surrounding the location, observing him dump banknotes of various denominations on the ground. Despite police demands, the subject continued to flee.
They then apprehended the alleged culprit, who had abandoned the weapon used in the crime at the tobacco shop a few minutes before. It turned out to be a plastic weapon that resembled a knife.
When the officers interviewed the tobacco store owner, he stated that the suspect had come into his establishment minutes before with a black knife and threatened to stab him “if he didn’t give him the money.”
The thief then rushed over the counter to collect all the money, leaving the victim paralysed by the terrible situation.
Once the cash register was empty, the robber leaped over the counter again and fled.
Consequently, the National Police have detained a man for allegedly committing robbery with violence and intimidation. They also seized the replica knife and the stolen cash, which totalled 790 euros.
The arrested person has been placed under the custody of the Alicante Court of First Instance.
