The National Police reminded residents of the need to take precautions against frauds, thefts, and other misfortunes that frequently occur during the summer and can derail a holiday planned with excitement and work in seconds.
Proper planning and adherence to simple security rules can help you prevent financial losses, unsafe situations, and unneeded inconvenience, both in the digital environment while arranging a vacation and when securing your house or busy entertainment venues.
Before you depart, plan your travel safely
Scammers are increasingly active during this time of year on vacation rental and package travel websites. To prevent falling into scams:
- Be aware of offers with exorbitantly low pricing or urgent booking deadlines.
- Pay exclusively through trusted channels and avoid direct transfers.
- Verify the landlord’s identity, seek a contract, and keep all documents.
- Never provide photos of your ID or bank information via instant chat.
- Also, make sure your documentation is in order before travelling.
The DNI may be renewed up to 180 days before it expires.
The passport, up to a year.
Without these valid documents, you may be unable to board a plane, take a train, or stay at a hotel.
Prepare your home to look lived-in.
During extended absences, it is critical that your home does not feel empty.
- Do not post on social media that you are going on vacation.
- Set lights to timers or switch on a radio or television at specific times.
- Ask someone you trust to collect your mail and keep a watch on your house, particularly if you mark your doors with small plastic tags or adhesive threads.
- Lock your doors and windows, and turn on any alarm or video surveillance systems you have.
Keep your stuff safe whether at the beach, pool, or in crowded areas.
Thieves use carelessness and congestion to steal personal belongings.
- Always keep your bag or backpack closed and in front of your body.
- Never leave your possessions unattended while bathing.
- Keep an eye on your phone and wallet, and store them in your front pockets.
- Avoid carrying big sums of cash.
- Be aware of persons who offer vague excuses or create distractions.
