Torrevieja has begun adopting a coordination mechanism between the city centre’s subterranean parking facilities and the Local Police to close traffic when parking spaces become full. This effort, which will run throughout July and August, aims to reduce the congestion caused by vehicles moving onto the promenades and terraces in the city centre after dark. This considerable surge in traffic occurs practically every day of the summer, particularly on weekends, between 7:30 p.m. and after midnight.
The summer “closure” system will operate when parking spots along the seashore, including Vista Alegre in the Paseo del Mar leisure area of the port, are full. Marina Salinas will run out of spaces.
The Local Police used fences and warning lights to limit access to the promenades, including at the intersections of Avenida Gregorio Marañón and Calle Faleria Street and Ramón Gallud and Calle MarÃa Parodi.

This legislation also permits automobiles to park in public parking lots near the city centre but not on the waterfront, such as at El Arco, Plaza de Oriente, or the Virgen del Carmen cultural centre. This year’s deal includes parking in the former Mercadona car park on Calle Antonio Machado.
According to Federico Alarcón, councillor for Traffic, this “closure operation” is expected to be used less frequently this summer as the area is recovering parking spaces lost during the Paseo del Mar leisure area’s construction. The Paseo del Mar leisure area now has a new underground car park with 600 spaces.
Works and less capacity
One thing is certain: even if there are more parking places this year, the capacity of the city center’s roads to handle them has decreased. For example, Avenida de La Libertad now has only one lane in each way.
The same sources emphasise that if the car parks are not full, traffic will not be disrupted.
Another measure to try to smooth the flow of an estimated flow of over 5,000 vehicles per day, as stated in the area’s mobility plan, is that, in addition to the influx of vehicles, parking on Calle Ramón Gallud is prohibited from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 a.m. the next day in order to speed up traffic in the area and ensure that this road makes use of its two real traffic lanes.
Exit lanes are one of the factors that help with automobile traffic flow. Until last Saturday, motorists approaching via Calle MarÃa Parodi and Paseo de Vista Alegre had to leave the port area due to a scarcity of parking on Calle Ramón y Cajal, Calle Chapaprieta, and the exit from Paseo de Vista Alegre itself.
After more than eight months of construction work on Rambla Juan Mateo to double stormwater drainage capacity, the roadway reopened to traffic this summer, albeit only temporarily, as the work is still ongoing and has been delayed by more than three months. Starting this Tuesday, left turns to avoid traffic will be available at Plaza de Capdepont.
New traffic lights
Paseo de La Libertad, which is currently being rebuilt, was also completed during construction. Pedestrians assemble in front of the former “BahÃa” restaurant on Paseo de Juan Aparicio. The City Council was forced to construct a traffic light at the intersection of Calle Ramón y Cajal and Paseo de Juan Aparicio to allow pedestrians to cross, which has resulted in traffic delays. The Local Police admit that preventing traffic congestion at that point, which directs pedestrians to Paseo de Las Rocas, will be extremely difficult this summer.
