According to the Emergency Coordination Centre, a 17-year-old kid died while freediving off Mazarrón’s Cueva de Lobos beach on Thursday, July 10th. His body was located at a depth of about 14 metres.
Around 11:45 a.m., the Murcia Region 1-1-2 emergency service received a contact from a boat near Cueva de Lobos beach, reporting a male in a kayak needing help.
According to the caller, the man was looking for his 17-year-old son, who was freediving off the islet of Cueva de Lobos and had discovered his harpoon floating on the surface.
The Plan Copla Beach Coordinator, the State Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Cartagena (Sasemar), the Mazarrón Civil Protection Department, and the Mazarrón Local Police have all been informed.
Lifeguards from Mazarrón City Council’s Plan Copla have begun searching for the missing diver, who was discovered stuck at a depth of roughly 14 meters. The head of Mazarrón Civil Protection has requested that the Guardia Civil’s underwater rescue group (GEAS) be activated.
The 061 Emergency and Health Department has sent a Mobile Emergency Unit to Punta Bella, where the deceased young man’s family is being treated.
A Red Cross vessel has brought the Guardia Civil diving team (GEAS) to the site of the deceased diver for rescue and transport to port.
