The closure of three of Denia’s busiest beaches coincides with the height of the tourist season, a time when thousands of people seek solace from the sea. The Denia City Council has received news from the Ministry of the Environment’s Bathing Water Quality Service, indicating that tests obtained yesterday, Monday July 14th, at various beaches in the city revealed elevated levels of microbiological controls.
Les Marines, Punta del Raset, and Molins beaches have faecal contamination levels that are more than twice the maximum allowable amounts. These are the three most popular beaches in Dénia, with the first two being the closest to the town centre.
The Denia City Council has immediately restricted these beaches to bathing and will lower the blue flags, as required by law. The firm that provides lifeguard services on the beaches has also been advised of the situation, allowing them to notify the public and evacuate bathers. Local police officers travelling around the coast on quads will be helpful in this attempt.
How long will the closing last?
The closure will stay in place until the sampling results show values consistent with bathing water quality. The Water Quality Service will conduct another analysis today and will notify the City Council once the results are complete.
The Denia City Council, for its part, will now be in charge of creating a report on the potential sources of the contamination, as well as the steps that will be taken to address it.
