A fire broke out yesterday, Saturday July 19th, at the infamous Cigar at the Pink Lake in the Torrevieja Lagoon Natural Park, near the Torreta III residential complex. Just before 7 p.m., firefighters were on the scene, assisted by Local Police and the Guardia Civil.
The flames, which were doused by the Fire Department about 10 p.m., extended to the salt marsh vegetation, reed beds, and woodlands surrounding the salt lake, which is extremely close to the Las Torretas residential neighbourhood and falls within the protected zone. The westerly wind rapidly spread the fire and pushed it away from populated areas.
A dense column of smoke could be seen for kilometres, coming from neighbouring communities like San Miguel de Salinas and Los Montesinos.
According to sources at the Provincial Fire Consortium, the fire started “in the vicinity” of the spa, commonly known as “la caracola.”
Sources say that the initial outbreak was placed at one end of the structure of the building itself, pushed by the City Council and planned by the famous Japanese architect Toyo Ito. For more than fifteen years, the construction has remained uncompleted.
firefighters from Torrevieja and Orihuela.
Several cars carrying nine firefighters from the Torrevieja and Orihuela fire stations were deployed to the scene.
Abandonment
The spa, in which the municipality invested more than one million euros without first getting the necessary permissions from the Coastal Authority, has had multiple catastrophic fires in recent years, and what remains of its structure has been entirely vandalised.
