The swift intervention of a National Police patrol from Alicante, equipped with a defibrillator, saved the life of a 56-year-old man who suffered cardiac arrest while having dinner with his wife last Saturday night at The Outlet Stores Alicante shopping centre, in the municipality of San Vicente del Raspeig.
The SAMU doctors, who continued providing care and evacuated the man to a hospital, emphasised to the officers that their actions were “crucial” and saved the life of the man who had the heart attack. He already had heart problems and was awaiting surgery to have a pacemaker inserted.
The humanitarian aid was provided shortly after 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 19th. A patrol from the Citizen Assistance Group (GAC) of the Alicante National Police Citizen Security Brigade was on duty in Colonia Santa Isabel due to a fire. While there, they heard an emergency call from their colleagues from the San Vicente Local Police.
The call alerted them that a person was in cardiac arrest in a restaurant in The Outlet Stores shopping centre. Therefore, the National Police patrol, which had a semi-automatic external defibrillator (AED) in its vehicle, rushed to the scene, located a short distance away.
No Pulse
When officers arrived at the store, they observed a man lying on the floor and two other men performing CPR. The officers joined in, but when they saw that the man still had no pulse and was unresponsive, they decided to use the assisted defibrillator.
With the first shock they administered, the man responded and began to speak, unaware of what had happened to him. Shortly after, a SAMU ambulance arrived, and the medical team continued providing care at the scene and subsequently transferred him to Alicante General Hospital.
SAMU paramedics told the officers that their intervention with the AED was “crucial and saved the man’s life,” according to police sources.
The National Police patrol discovered that the man was having dinner with his wife at a store in the shopping centre and suddenly began to feel ill and eventually collapsed.
While waiting for the emergency services to arrive, two members of the public began performing CPR on the floor of the premises, but the man still had no pulse and did not regain it until the rapid intervention of a nearby Alicante National Police patrol, which also had a defibrillator.
