The Alicante City Council’s Governing Board accepted a public tender on Tuesday to complete the Isla de Corfú Park in the La Torreta-PAU II neighbourhood. The tender budget is 3,633,376.19 euros with a six-month execution timeframe. On April 24, inhabitants of La Torreta (PAU 2) were presented with a project to complete a green space of almost 20,000 square meters between Isla de Corfú and Deportista Isabel Fernández avenues. The park will contain a stage, three modified play spaces, a zip line, and slides.
This €3.6 million project will include a stage with stands, three children’s play areas, including a 28-meter zip line and adapted games; nine large slides for recreational overcoming of uneven ground; a sports area with a callisthenics area, a bio-health exercise circuit, petanque courts, and a climbing wall; and green areas with hedges and trees, as well as rest and shaded areas.
Rocío Gómez, Councillor for Urban Planning, explains that the initiative aims to finish the park’s development, which was left unfinished in 2023. This includes facilities, asphalt, planting, furniture, and recreational equipment. The Councillor emphasises that because of this initiative, “Alicante residents and visitors will be able to enjoy one of the best and most complete green areas in the city, with a wide range of sports, play, and relaxation options, and with an innovative design, a much-needed and necessary infrastructure that will soon be a reality.”
The project
The park is envisioned as a huge green space with varied heights and areas for play, sports, and leisure. The park’s tree and hedge plantings have been organised to highlight the spaces’ diversity, with species organised by colour, flowering season, and compatibility. The goal is for the garden to provide a shifting visual journey, with each region distinguished by a predominant flowering colour, resulting in a dynamic and aesthetically rich environment throughout the year.
The park will have sections with street furniture for public rest and enjoyment, as well as shaded areas. The most notable aspect of this planned park in Alicante is the great quantity and variety of recreational and sporting spaces it will have, including a stage with stands for various types of outdoor events.
Play and sports regions
The park will include three children’s play spaces with accessible paths, touch and sound panels, and modified swings. It will also have a 28-meter-long zip line and nine slides on the slopes dividing the park’s terraces, providing an additional route specifically designed for youngsters. These slides connect the upper viewing platform to the rounded gravel pit where the zip line is located, providing a dynamic experience that enhances the park’s journey and serves as a delightful transition between the various levels of the landscape.
Climbing ropes will also be set parallel to the slopes on the sides of the slides, allowing people to climb up them. This approach not only provides a fun and dynamic alternative to the park’s itinerary, but it also promotes physical activity and interactive play, enhancing the tourist experience and promoting involvement from individuals of all ages and abilities.
The sporting facilities are an important element of the park, particularly for elderly visitors. These are positioned near the southwest entrances but are fluidly integrated to the play areas, allowing for easy movement and interaction among people of all ages. The facilities include a callisthenics area, a bio-health exercise circuit, petanque courts, a climbing wall, and other amenities that encourage guests to lead a healthy lifestyle.
