The Guardia Civil has arrested two males in Calpe, who are suspected of being responsible for ten burglaries in vehicles parked in car parks near beaches, primarily in Calpe, Moraira, and Xàbia. Upon identifying the detainees, we found that French judicial authorities had European arrest warrants for both of them.
The Calpe Police Station’s Inquiry Department launched the inquiry in May after seeing a considerable spike in thefts from automobiles placed in parking lots near tourist-friendly beach areas.
The plan was simple: the offenders drove to crowded beaches, found vehicles parked in unguarded dirt parking lots, and, after verifying the owners were not present, forced open doors or windows to obtain entry. They stole goods, including jewellery, money, and technological equipment.
During one of the covert monitoring missions, investigators noticed a vehicle inhabited by two males, which raised suspicions. After investigating their actions, officers discovered one of them throwing away a backpack in a skip. Officers, suspicious of their actions, identified them and established their close connection to two previous robberies in the neighbourhood.
A search of the vehicle found several allegedly stolen items, including a sports camera, a tripod, a selfie stick, an external battery, jewellery, high-end perfumes, and €1,500 in cash.
Vehicle-breaking tools were also discovered. A foreign traveller identified the found rucksack as hers, as well as the remainder of the photographic material within.
After their detention, French police discovered that both suspects were under European arrest orders. Police charged one of them with homicide and filed a warrant for violent robbery in Spain. The other detainee fled from a French prison where he was doing time for robbery, fraud, and extortion.
The detainees, two Algerian men aged 42 and 31, were taken before the Dénia Court of First Instance on duty for stealing with force and then transferred to the National Court under European extradition orders.
The Guardia Civil advises you of the following tips to avoid theft from vehicles parked in tourist areas:
• Avoid leaving valuables visible inside the vehicle.
• When possible, park in well-lit areas, guarded parking lots, or pedestrian-friendly places.
• Before leaving, make sure the vehicle is fully locked.
• Immediately report any criminal or suspicious activity.
• Report incidents quickly and easily using the free AlertCops app or by calling 062.
