On Tuesday afternoon, July 22nd, a shrub and palm tree fire broke out near Avenida Miguel Indurain in Murcia, causing widespread concern in the region’s capital. It happened in the middle of the La Fica shantytown, which has seen similar instances before. Emergencies frequently occur in a region where residents’ belongings and trash accumulate alongside the weeds.
It was just after 5:00 p.m. when the emergency services received multiple calls about the fire, but mainly about the smoke, which could be seen from a great way. The deployment of services was swift. The fire department say that approximately twenty firefighters in six vehicles from the Parque del Infante were deployed to the area to attempt to contain the spread of the flames. “The entire station has been evacuated,” a fire department spokesperson confirmed.
Because of the closeness of some substandard housing, local police officers who responded to the incident evacuated these structures as a precaution and to avoid personal injury.
The fire produced a massive column of smoke that was visible for kilometres around. The flames, spreading down the roadway, delayed traffic.
Officers eventually closed Avenida Miguel Indurain to traffic. The route reopened after the danger had passed.
Last Saturday, a fire involving reeds, orchards, and brush near Murcia drew approximately twenty firefighters and the regional government’s aircraft. The fire started somewhere between Calle Claras and the Muleta Bridge, between Monteagudo and Cabezo de Torres. According to witnesses, one of the most dangerous aspects was the proximity of an electricity pylon. In Tuesday’s event, a fire broke out in an area near the water treatment facility.
The fire on Tuesday was deemed under control at six p.m., but firefighters stayed on the site to cool the area and keep it from rekindling.
The shantytown in question has been there for years, although the city council has razed it on several occasions.
