Using the “crutch method,” the Guardia Civil has arrested four individuals for their involvement in a series of burglaries that occurred in El Castell de Guadalest. This action has resulted in the dismantling of a structured criminal organisation that operates in a coordinated manner in tourist areas.
The Callosa d’en Sarrià station initiated the operation in April of last year in response to numerous complaints from tourists who claimed to have been the victims of accidental burglaries while strolling through the historic town of Guadalest.
The Guardia Civil emphasise in their statement that the events in all cases adhered to a consistent pattern: the perpetrators employed the “crutch method,” a distraction technique that involves concealing a portion of the arm or body with a garment (such as a sweater or scarf) while approaching the victim to steal wallets, mobiles, personal documents, or jewellery.
The Guardia Civil increased its surveillance in response to the rise in this form of crime. Additionally, the authorities were able to identify numerous individuals whose presence coincided with the dates of the offences as a result of citizen collaboration and coordination with the authorities.
The vehicle was intercepted on the CV-70 near the Polop municipality, and a road closure was promptly implemented at the town’s entrances. The four occupants were ultimately apprehended.
The vehicle contained nearly 4,000 euros in cash in a variety of foreign currencies, as well as jewellery whose provenance is currently under investigation.
A 43-year-old man and three women, aged 31, 34, and 37, all of Romanian nationality, were brought before the Villajoyosa Investigative Court. The court ordered their release, as well as the revocation of their passports, a ban on entry to Guadalest, and mandatory appearances every 15 days.
