The project will take 18 months to complete and will cost 6,458,853 euros (including VAT). Following the demolition, the entire area will be conditioned, a new temporary fence will be installed, modular construction sheds will be placed, and materials will be stockpiled, all with the assistance of an archaeology team hired by the City Council in accordance with the Cultural Heritage of the Generalitat Valenciana’s requirements.
Work on the rehabilitation of the Ice Factory building began on Tuesday, 22nd July, with the dismantling of the historic ‘Salinas Group of Companies’ and its adaptation to the surroundings of the Eras de la Sal and the Museum of Sea and Salt. Following the demolition work, the entire area will be reconditioned in the coming days with the installation of a new temporary fence, the placement of modular construction sheds, and material stockpiling, all assisted by the City Council’s archaeology team in accordance with the Cultural Heritage of the Generalitat Valenciana requirements.
The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has confirmed that construction work on the building attached to the Ice Factory will continue in the next weeks without impacting traffic on this essential thoroughfare into and out of town.
The new structure will be very utilitarian, with two distinct rooms. The Ice Factory will house the city’s Tourist Office, which will be extensively rebuilt and modernised in terms of space and technology, as well as the Sea and Salt Museum’s welcome area.
The annexe building will contain the Department of Tourism, as well as the Centre for Innovation and Tourism Management, demonstrating a clear commitment to modernising, digitalising, and researching our tourist sector. It could also house other municipal areas, such as the new museum’s management departments, the International Residents Assistance Office (OARI), the Migrant Assistance Office (PANGEA), and other currently dispersed agencies, to improve citizen service.
The total budget for the works is around €6.5 million, with an 18-month completion period. It is worth noting that the Valencian Government has set aside €100,000 for the 2025 fiscal year to begin the repair and extension of the Ice Factory, with a €2 million investment planned for the 2026 and 2027 fiscal years.
