In two distinct interventions last weekend in Alicante, the National Police arrested five individuals in connection with burglaries in homes located in the city centre. The “slip” method, which entails the use of hard plastic, X-rays, or any similar object to unlock the doors of homes where the residents have neglected to secure them, was employed.
The police also arrested a sixth individual who entered a dental clinic and fled by scaling down the balcony. Public collaboration was crucial in two of the three interventions, as it facilitated the officers’ actions and resulted in the apprehension of the thieves.
A building in the San Antón neighbourhood of Alicante was the site of one of the National Police interventions, which occurred at approximately 5:00 a.m. last Saturday, July 26th. A woman was asleep in her residence when she abruptly awoke to the sound of footsteps at her door.
The victim awoke from her slumber and observed that the noise emanating from the frame and door was the sound of plastic. The woman promptly contacted the National Police’s 091 emergency room after the criminals rang the doorbell.
The woman informed the police of the situation while crouching in a corner of her home and whispering to ensure that the thieves would not notice her. The 091 emergency room promptly dispatched patrol cars to the location.
The criminals fled the scene, presumably upon recognising the police presence, as the uniformed and plainclothes officers who responded to the emergency call heard them. They observed two suspicious individuals leaping onto the adjacent building and heard noises, such as the breaking of tiles.
Despite the police’s efforts to halt the intruders, they disregard their presence and persist in their escape. The officers observed them attempting to descend and ultimately succeeding in doing so from a wall that was approximately four meters in height. The two suspects were apprehended despite their attempts to escape, as plainclothes officers were waiting for them below.
The third suspect was arrested a few moments later on a nearby street, where he was observed mounted on a wall that was approximately two meters high.
The police apprehended the three alleged criminals—two aged 34 and one aged 20—and transported them to headquarters for further investigation. All three individuals are of Algerian descent and possess a police record. They were in possession of a pickaxe, a hinge, and folded plastic sheets that are frequently employed to open locks using the “slip” method at the time of their arrest.
At the residence of the woman who had requested assistance, the National Police conducted an inspection of the door and discovered indications of an attempt to enter.
Robbery in the Daylight
The National Police’s 091 unit was notified of an additional robbery that occurred inside a residence in the heart of Alicante at approximately 8:30 p.m. on the same Saturday. The “slip” strategy was also employed to record the robbery. Subsequently, officers arrested two Croatian women, aged 25 and 19, as the perpetrators.
The victims reported the theft of money and jewellery, and the patrols in the city centre were notified. Two women had already attempted to burgle a residence approximately two hours prior.
While passing through Town Hall Square, a patrolling police vehicle observed two women turn around and proceed towards Calle Virgen del Socorro upon spotting the officers. The officers were suspicious of the women’s conduct, and they observed them tearing off a piece of paper containing a phone number.
They then proceeded to identify them, and, despite their efforts to mimic a typical tourist visiting Alicante for leisure, they soon realised that they were not. The 19-year-old woman was wearing a cap and holding a wide-brimmed headwear in one hand, which she used to conceal a screwdriver. Additionally, she was carrying a towel that contained gardening gloves, scissors, and a spanner.
The police affirmed that these women were the same ones who had attempted to rob a second home and fled, and all of this served as a tip-off. Both women were arrested, despite the fact that they had no prior criminal history in Spain. Subsequently, it is believed that they had arrived from their homeland to perpetrate criminal activities during the summerseason.
The National Police successfully resolved the third robbery on July 25th at approximately 5:00 a.m. at a property in the Carolinas neighbourhood of Alicante. A 28-year-old Algerian male with a criminal record was arrested.
An individual was observed by a neighbour descending down a first-floor balcony in the early hours of the morning, prompting the 091 Police Station to investigate a potential robbery. The patrol officers who were dispatched to the scene observed a young man seated in a nearby park. The man’s characteristics were consistent with those provided by his neighbour, who raised the alarm. They also noted that he was holding a pair of medical tweezers.
The young man claimed he had found them, but the officers didn’t believe him and found that the mezzanine from which he had climbed contained a dental prosthesis laboratory. Upon inspection, they discovered objects prepared for theft. The suspect was arrested and taken to the Alicante Provincial Police Station, where he was held for further investigation before being brought before a court.
