After being brutally assaulted by two individuals while attempting to prevent a crime from being committed off duty, a National Police officer from Elche is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Elche’s General Hospital. The Jupol (National Police) union has issued its most vehement condemnation of the officer’s barbaric beating. It has also declared that it will bring a private prosecution and has requested that the case be tried as attempted murder.
The two attackers, who punched and hurled stones at the officer, have not yet been caught. However, the Elche Police Station has initiated an investigation to identify the perpetrators and apprehend them.
The incident allegedly commenced on Calle Clara Campoamor when the off-duty officer, who is a union member, was returning home and observed two individuals tampering with a motorbike, according to sources from Jupol. The officer was brutally assaulted by the two as he attempted to reprimand them for the incident. They allegedly beat him until he was rendered unconscious on the ground.
The violence was so severe that medical services did not hesitate to transport him to the hospital, where he continues to suffer from severe injuries. According to Jupol, the injuries he sustained include the loss of nearly all of his teeth, a fractured nostril, a skull fracture, a broken eyelid, 12 staples in his head, and waterlogged lungs.
Jupol asserts that it has been monitoring the colleague’s development and concerned about his health since the outset. Additionally, representatives of Jupol in the province of Alicante have extended their full support and resources to guarantee that the officer and his family receive the necessary assistance.
Attempted homicide
Jupol clearly demonstrates that the events that transpired cannot be categorised as a simple case of battery or assault: “This is evidently an attempt at murder.” The assailants’ brutality and violence in attacking the officer are indicative of a homicidal intent that necessitates the highest level of legal repercussions.
The union emphasises that the assault was part of a police action, as the officer intervened as a national police officer to prevent a prospective crime, despite being off duty.
Consequently, we request that the events be investigated as a crime of attempted murder and assault against a law enforcement officer, with all the aggravating circumstances as outlined in the Penal Code.
Private prosecution Jupol has already commenced the process of serving as a private prosecutor in the legal proceedings, following the identification and detention of the responsible parties, as the National Police is currently conducting an ongoing investigation. In a statement, the union declared, “We will not permit this attack to remain unpunished or any attempt to minimise its gravity.”
According to Jupol, this incident serves as yet another illustration of the dangers that national police officers encounter in their daily lives when they elect to intervene to safeguard citizens during their leisure time, in addition to on the job.
Jupol is once again urging the government to implement immediate measures to ensure the safety of officers at all times, as well as a more stringent Penal Code for assaults on members of the State Security Forces.
Additionally, they encourage political representatives and institutions to refrain from downplaying the gravity of these incidents. “This colleague has put his life on the line to uphold the security and public order that he swore to protect.” “Now it is incumbent upon each of us to demonstrate our support for him through action, rather than mere words,” the union organisation asserts.
Jupol guarantees that it will continue until justice is served: “We will do it for him, for his family, and for all the colleagues who risk their lives every day to protect the public.”
The Spanish Police Confederation (CEP) in Alicante also condemned the incident on social media and enquired of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez whether “these are the streets that are as safe as you think?” …You ought to be embarrassed,” the message asserts.
