The Guardia Civil is issuing a warning regarding a scam that has already fooled many. This is the “six-digit scam,” a cybercrime that has become more prevalent during the summer months on applications such as WhatsApp and Telegram. The scam starts with the delivery of a message in the app that appears to be from WhatsApp technical support. This notification may appear to be genuine, but it is not.
In this conversation, the alleged employee informs his victim that his account has been compromised and that, for security purposes, he will be required to provide a code that he has recently received via SMS. This six-digit code is a personal and non-transferable access key to the WhatsApp account and should not be disclosed to any individual. The scammers will then be able to commandeer their victim’s account in a matter of seconds with this code.
Cybercriminals can impersonate their victims, access private conversations and compromising messages, send fraudulent messages in their name, pilfer personal information, or even extort money by gaining access to chats and WhatsApp accounts. Consequently, the Guardia Civil advises that everyone remain vigilant for the potential receipt of these communications and refrain from responding and reporting the phone number if they do. To accomplish this, in the app, navigate to the conversation, click on the three dots located in the upper right corner, and select “Report.” The victim has the option to submit the incident to the National Police by visiting their website https://www.policia.es/_gl/denuncias.php
