The PSOE (Socialist Workers’ Party) in Guardamar once again opposed a motion in support of the families concerned about the demolition of the historic residences of Engineer Mira on Playa de Babilonia in the town of Vega Baja. The PP introduced the motion, Vox endorsed it, and the EU chose to abstain. The concessionaires of these residences were endorsed by the motion, and they will be demolished on September 15.
The Socialist councillor, Pilar Gay, who is responsible for Heritage, Culture, Finance, Agriculture, and Fisheries, has stated that the Supreme Court has already adopted a solution for the Playa Babilonia housing. She has denied the possibility of suspending the demolitions due to the approval of the Valencian Coast Law, which was promoted by Consell de Carlos Mazón in defence of the historical and ethnological centres.
It was merely another motion that, as the PP clarified, “is not political, but rather one of empathy and support for a hundred families who have never found the support of Guardamar City Council.” The local socialist government concurred with the national government, which has jurisdiction over coastal matters.

The government made a “gesture” to support the inhabitants’ request for declaration as an ethnological centre and for the regeneration of the beaches. The Socialist councillor was unable to reconcile this, as she reiterated her opposition to the Valencian Coastal Law, which she held responsible for an “impossibility of legislative development”. She referred to it as a “celebration of the sun.”
The Elche City Council defended the properties in La Marina, setting a precedent in the municipal debate. In contrast to the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party) in Guardamar, the Elche People’s Party (PP) introduced a motion in May to commence the process of designating the buildings situated on the beachfront of El Pinet and La Marina as Traditional Historic Sites, which are designated as Assets of Local Significance).
In response to Gay’s assertion that it was “a toast to the sun,” the Vox spokesperson in Guardamar stated that “Elche will succeed” in safeguarding its coastal residences “because they are interested in supporting the citizens and also in removing tourism from here.”
The motion was unsuccessful as a result of the Socialist majority in the Guardamar City Council. However, the PP spokesperson, after admonishing the mayor for failing to respond to her in the plenary session as he had promised, stated that she welcomed the EU’s invitation to collaborate and prevent politicisation in this matter.
