National Police officers have arrested two individuals on suspicion of violating workers’ rights. The officers believe that the individuals were responsible for exploiting foreign citizens who were in the country without legal status.
The investigation commenced when a police checkpoint in the town of Yecla (Murcia) identified a van that was transporting nine labourers, four of whom were in Spain illegally. It was discovered that one of the detainees’ companies was a subcontractor that was involved in agricultural work in the towns of Villena (Alicante) and Pétrola (Albacete), where it employed illegal labourers.
Workers were subjected to abusive conditions and restricted rights, including indefinite working hours, no health insurance, no social security registration, or work permits, as well as extremely low compensation.
A total of eleven victims of labour exploitation were identified as a result of inspections conducted at the enterprises where these undocumented workers were employed.
The workers’ physical integrity was seriously jeopardised by the frequent transfers, which frequently exceeded the maximum occupant capacity of the vehicle, which was operated by an individual without a driver’s license.
The two detainees were ultimately hauled before the Yecla Duty Court to ensure that the necessary precautionary measures were undertaken.
