The health and safety plan for the impending commencement of restoration work on the Santa Ana Bastion at Santa Bárbara Castle is anticipated to be approved by the Local Government Board of Alicante City Council. Nerco Infraestructuras will execute the project for a total of €335,328. The Regional Ministry of Culture is co-financing the initiative, which has a five-month completion period. The Ministry is contributing €162,203.
The project involves the renewal of the interior surface and paving of the bastion, as well as the restoration of the patrol pathways, parapets, and the crown of the ridge, which includes its gun ports. Additionally, this project transforms the Santa Ana Bastion from a car park to a pedestrian zone.
The intervention aims to achieve four objectives: the improvement of public access and the enhancement of the Castle’s value through the functional rehabilitation of the pavement, the restoration of the bastion’s heritage elements, the reorganisation of extant movable elements and installations, and the recovery of pedestrian space.
This project at Santa Bárbara Castle is an extension of a series of initiatives that are currently in progress at the fortress, with the objective of enhancing the visitor experience, modernising it, and conserving it. The total cost of these initiatives exceeds three million euros. In reality, the Contracting Committee has already finalised the subsequent contract for the provision and installation of a system that will monitor and analyse the capacity, occupancy, and usage of the monument that stands atop the Benacantil.
Redevelopment of the adjacent area and accessibility enhancements are currently in progress.
Similarly, the redevelopment of the adjacent area and the enhancement of accessibility through the construction of a pedestrian path from La Ereta Park are currently in progress. Additionally, the engineer’s former residence will be transformed into a Visitor Reception Centre. Innovation is currently ongoing with the virtual reality museum project, and the Castle is on the brink of being sensorised, a project for which six companies have submitted applications.
Simultaneously, the project for the rehabilitation of the Albacar d’Enmig moat, a portion of the Santa Caterina Tower, the Coloma Tower, and the Postern, as well as the bridge over the moat that provides access to that area of the citadel, has already been approved.
