The driver of a heavy goods vehicle was intercepted and investigated by the Guardia Civil after being observed driving on the A-30 motorway (A-31/Albacete-Cartagena) in the municipality of Torre Pacheco. He was driving recklessly and was six times the legal limit for alcohol, which posed a significant risk to other road users. The motorist is a 47-year-old resident of Castellón de la Plana.
A heavy vehicle was observed travelling abnormally on the A-30, which connects Albacete with Cartagena, near Torre Pacheco. The Guardia Civil was notified of the incident by a number of road users.
The Guardia Civil’s Traffic Group dispatched numerous personnel to the region where the articulated vehicle was travelling in order to confirm the events and, if necessary, provide further clarification.
Guardia Civil traffic specialists halted traffic to prevent a road catastrophe and diverted the heavy vehicle to a nearby clearing, where it was intercepted, after the truck was located.
The professional driver’s erratic driving behaviour was observed on-site by the Guardia Civil, with the assistance of the public. Additionally, they discovered that the vehicle was engaging in extremely hazardous manoeuvres, including zigzagging and crossing both lanes and the hard shoulder in a sudden, repeated, and reckless manner for a distance of several kilometres, as evidenced by recordings provided by other drivers.
The driver, who was travelling from Valencia to Cartagena, was administered breathalyser tests after the vehicle was stopped and immobilised. The initial test revealed a blood alcohol level of 0.91 mg/l, while the subsequent test revealed a level of 0.97 mg/l. This level is six times the maximum permissible for professional drivers, which is 0.15 mg/l in this instance.
The driver was charged with two road safety offences by Guardia Civil officers from the Traffic Sector, one of which was excessively reckless driving and the other for exceeding the legally established alcohol limit.
These offences, which are governed by the current Penal Code, are subject to imprisonment for a period of six months to two years and a prohibition from operating motor vehicles and mopeds for a period of one to six years.
The Guardia Civil is requesting public cooperation, as has been the case in this instance, due to the significant risk posed by irregular vehicle traffic. In the event that they identify any of these circumstances, they should promptly contact 112 (Emergency) or 062 (Guardia Civil) to ensure that the perpetrator is apprehended prior to a road catastrophe.
