The UGT union has initiated a strike of Menzies group ground personnel that will impact five Spanish airports, namely Alicante-Elche, Barcelona-El Prat, Palma, Malaga, and Tenerife South, on August 16th, 17th, 23rd, 24th, 30th, and 31st.
Emirates, British Airways, American Airlines, EasyJet, Turkish Airlines, Norwegian, and Wizz Air are among the airlines that Menzies services.
In a statement, the workers’ representatives expressed their dissatisfaction with “the serious and repeated breaches of labour agreements and the conditions established by collective bargaining agreements.”
The UGT identifies various violations, including “non-compliance with wages, violation of subrogation rights, disorganisation in working hours and schedules, and constant errors in personnel and payroll management.”
Additionally, they maintain that the workload is unmanageable due to a dearth of staff and the “arbitrary imposition of vacation time.”
The union alleges that the company is in violation of the sectoral handling agreement, the company’s own agreement, and the sectoral agreement ratified by the Interconfederal Mediation and Arbitration Service (SIMA) in December 2024. The latter agreement permitted the annulment of a previous strike.
In protest of worker sanctions and overtime abuse, this strike follows the one organised by the UGT in Ryanair’s handling (ground services) department. The strike at Azul Handling, Ryanair’s handling subsidiary, will commence on August 15th, 16th, and 17th and will persist on every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until December 31st, 2025.
