After leaving their three children, aged one, three, and six, alone for several hours, a 29-year-old man and his 27-year-old wife were arrested in Alicante last weekend for child abandonment. The data compiled during the police investigation indicates that this was a practice they must have engaged in on a regular basis.
At the time of the police intervention, the mother reported that she was celebrating, while the father was at a nearby bar. The two were arrested after they both arrived at the residence. The three minors were initially placed in the custody of a relative, and both parents were released on bail.
Last Saturday, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the incident was discovered. Several minors had been left alone on a balcony of a building in the Colonia Requena neighbourhood of Alicante for several hours, according to a dispatch to emergency services.
The three children—two girls and a boy—were discovered unaccompanied by national and local police officers who promptly arrived at the site. The officers approached the residence and, upon opening the door, the six-year-old girl, who had been weeping uncontrollably, informed them that her parents had left a considerable amount of time prior. They informed them that they were off to go shopping and would return momentarily; however, they did not, and the children were already hungry after going several hours without eating.
The daughter stated that they departed at 3:00 p.m., despite the fact that it was still daylight. According to police sources, the conditions of the home that the police observed were not optimal, and they had been alone for several hours. The National Police investigation revealed that the children were in close proximity to bottles of alcohol, bad hygiene, disorder, and filth. Upon their arrival at the residence, the one-year-old was lying on the floor with a can of beer in his hand, and his nappy was already quite soiled due to the extended period of time since it had been changed.
The police noted that the children appeared to be “clearly neglected,” and a neighbour informed them that they had been left alone for several hours and were weeping profusely. She further stated that this was not the initial instance and that they conducted this activity on a regular basis. According to the police investigation, the six-year-old girl stated that it was a common occurrence and that her parents “frequently quarrelled and drank.” Consequently, she expressed her desire to reside with her grandparents.
The parents were attempted to be contacted by the patrols dispatched to the scene by the Northern District Police Station’s Operational Response Group (GOR) and the Local Police. Eventually, they were able to communicate with the father, who was present at a bar in close proximity to the residence. He arrived half an hour after being notified and informed the officers that he was returning from work. However, they noted that he had speech impediments and a strong alcohol odour. The father, who has a history of maltreatment, contacted the mother of the children, who informed him that she was attending a party. She returned to the home half an hour later after being informing of the incident.
The parents of the three children were arrested for child abandonment and transported to the police headquarters. Judicial Police officers conducted an investigation and subsequently delivered them to the Alicante duty court, which subsequently ordered their release. The authorities will now be liable for implementing measures regarding the custody of the couple’s three children, as the three minors were placed in the care of a relative.
