A 23-year-old man, who is suspected of attempting to rape a woman and assaulting a police officer in the port city, was ordered to be held in provisional detention without the possibility of parole by the Cartagena Duty Court.
Having spent the night at the National Police Station, the perpetrator was brought before the Examining Magistrate’s Court. He was subsequently transferred to the Sangonera prison, where inmates are confined in pretrial detention.
The alleged sexual offender has been placed in prison not only due to the severity of the crimes he is accused of, but also because he is a flight risk. As a young foreigner with no ties to the region, it is believed that he may attempt to evade justice by awaiting trial, as explained by the same sources. The suspect resided in the Temporary Immigrant Stay Centre (CETI) in Tentegorra, which is also referred to as the Naval “camp.”
In the early hours of the morning, the victim, a 28-year-old woman, was approached by the suspect, who was unfamiliar to her, on the “pink bridge,” a footbridge that connects the Concepción neighbourhood with the Alameda de San Antón, as reported by this newspaper.
The man intimidated the young woman and demanded that she surrender her mobile phone, according to her subsequent account. Then, she continues, he violently seized her, threw her to the ground, and began to remove her clothing.
He fled
Several bystanders rushed to the victim’s assistance as she began screaming for help. The sexual assailant was deterred by the presence of these individuals, who rushed to the victim’s assistance, and fled. The police were informed by those in attendance.
Despite the fact that she was not required to be admitted to the hospital, the woman sustained injuries that were addressed at a medical facility. Hours later, she reported her assailant with the injury report.
A man who resembled the individual they were seeking was located by National Police officers shortly thereafter. The man was standing on the hood of a vehicle, striking it, and engaging in an argument with the driver.
While being restrained, the young man resisted the police with great force and even inflicted injury on one of the four officers who arrested him. Particularly, his finger was fractured. The officer required medical attention and had his hand bandaged. The officer’s hand injuries were so severe that they forced him to take sick leave, and he continues to be on sick leave. This prevents him from performing his daily security responsibilities.
