The Local Government Board (LGB) approved the tendering of two strategic projects for the modernisation and improvement of the Port of Torrevieja on Tuesday, August 12th. These projects include the secondary electrification of the port area, the remodelling of the fishing dock cliff, and the development of the area surrounding Muelle Mínguez, according to the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón.
The marine area’s secondary electrification
This project, which has a base tender budget of 8,935,683 euros (VAT included) and an execution period of 11 months, has the potential to reduce the period by a maximum of 15 weeks in comparison to the initially planned period. This is a scoring scale in the tender that will enable the shortening of the execution periods by 4 months in comparison to the initially planned period, regardless of whether partial deliveries of the work occur. The objective is to establish a gradual opening of the fairgrounds to public use in accordance with the guidelines that the Torrevieja City Council consistently establishes.
The work encompasses the installation of the fairgrounds’ electrical panels and medium- and low-voltage lines, public illumination, and control and protection systems to guarantee the safe and reliable operation of the new facility, as well as the completion of underground pipelines. It will offer a functional space for the fairgrounds and other multipurpose venues, as well as ample space for the craft vendor displays. This will conclude the remodelling of the entire area, which encompasses landscaping, equipment, street furniture, and repaving.
The Government team would like to clarify that the potential for landscape and urban integration enhancements has been included as a component that will be evaluated. This will enable the team to submit proposals that are in accordance with the planned needs programme for the fairgrounds, particularly those related to the fair facilities and craft vendors, provided that they are compatible.
Urbanisation of the vicinity of the Mínguez Pier and remodelling of the fishing pier’s border
The second project that has been approved at JGL has a base tender budget of €5,845,298 (VAT included) and a five-month execution period. The project encompasses the complete renovation of the fishing pier’s cliff to enhance its operational and safety conditions, as well as the urbanisation of the entire area encircling Muelle Mínguez. This will result in a more accessible and organised space that optimises both port activity and public use.
The project encompasses the following: the reconstruction and demolition of pavements, the renovation of utility networks, the installation of new lighting and street furniture, and the enhancement of pedestrian and vehicle accessibility. Additionally, the decrease in construction timelines will be evaluated as an enhancement, comparable to that of the fairgrounds. In this instance, the maximum reduction in timeframe is six weeks, and as in the previous instance, this enables the prospect of partial delivery of the work.
The Government Team intends to establish a new promenade that will connect the current port entrance to the Levante breakwater. The promenade will continue along the port’s first line, passing through the rehabilitation work around the Mínguez dock, and is expected to become a new iconic landmark of our city.
A strategic investment for the Port of Torrevieja’s future
“These projects represent a decisive commitment to modernising the port, strengthening its role as an economic and tourism engine, and making it more sustainable and competitive,” Eduardo Dolón stated. The quality of life of our residents and the image of the city will be positively impacted by these initiatives, in addition to enhancing port infrastructure.
It is important to mention that both projects are included in the strategic investment plan that Torrevieja City Council is promoting. This plan encompasses projects that are planned for the city’s primary urban spaces and public facilities. Construction is anticipated to commence prior to the conclusion of 2025, following the tender process.
Lastly, the Mayor of Torrevieja declared that the redevelopment of the entire port landfill will be finalised by these two tenders. The tenders for the acquisition of the artisan vendors’ stalls and the completion of the finishing works around the Levante Dike walkway are currently pending. These will be tendered in the near future, ensuring that the entire complex is operational by 2026.
