The most recent air traffic data published by Aena, which once again reflect the highest passenger numbers in their history during the month of July, has prompted the Regional Minister for Innovation, Industry, Trade, and Tourism, Marián Cano, to call for the urgent expansion of the Valencia and Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández airports.
Consequently, Cano insisted that the expansion of both airports must be “an immediate priority” in order to maintain the competitiveness of the Valencian economy and tourism. He stated in a statement, “The data once again underscores the necessity of expediting the expansion work, as these are critical infrastructures for the development of the Valencian Community.”
The regional minister underscored that Valencia Airport and the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport are both exceeding their technical capacity, as evidenced by their sustained growth trend and record passenger numbers.
Valencia Airport recorded 1,132,402 passengers in July, representing a 4.2% increase from the same month in 2024, as per Aena data. As for operations, there were 8,777 flights, which represents a 4.8% increase from the previous year’s July.
Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport, on the other hand, accumulated 2,106,991 passengers, representing a 5.9% year-over-year increase. Last month, the Alicante airport processed 12,829 aircraft, representing a 5.7% increase from July 2024.
Marián Cano underscored the strategic significance of both infrastructures for the Valencian Community, pointing out that “we require a new runway in Alicante-Elche and an expansion of the terminal in Manises.” We can only then continue to serve the millions of visitors we receive each year and continue to expand as a tourist and logistics destination.
