A 77-year-old woman passed away after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a pedestrian crossing on Avenida José Samper in Torrevieja near Calle Helena, according to sources from the Department of Safety and Traffic.
The woman, a Spanish national who resides in Madrid, was using a pedestrian crossing when she was struck by an all-terrain vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was an 84-year-old Spanish national. The victim’s partner, who was crossing the pedestrian crossing next to her, narrowly missed the vehicle by inches, according to the same sources.
The motorist was apprehended by local law enforcement on the spot for reckless injury. He was subsequently questioned and released on bail. The vehicle was also carrying three additional members of the same family.
Cardiorespiratory arrest
The injured woman was transported to Torrevieja University Hospital with cardiac arrest and other injuries. She was treated for more than an hour to restore her vital signs through resuscitation manoeuvres, but she did not respond.
According to certain neighbours, the deceased and her husband were well-known in the neighbourhood, having been frequent summer visitors to the residential complex for many years. They explained that they had returned a few days ago after attending a medical appointment in Guadalajara, their customary city of residence, and were deeply affected by the tragic event.
Avenida José Samper García is situated in the northern region of Torrevieja, in close proximity to the Torre del Moro. The holiday season and the arrival of residents coincide with the heavy traffic that the area experiences throughout the year, particularly in the summer.
The Council has implemented safety features, including illuminated pedestrian crossings, in the vicinity of this avenue and adjacent areas to serve as a reminder to motorists to reduce their speed. Additionally, these have been installed at the pedestrian crossing where the fatal accident took place.
