The chief waiter, maître d’, at a hotel in Benidorm has been arrested for purportedly requesting that employees pay 100 euros per month in order to maintain their employment and complete more manageable tasks.
The 43-year-old man, who has been charged with extortion and workplace harassment, imposed tasks that were “unaffordable” for one person, with schedules that did not comply with workers’ rights and without rotation or days off, on those who refused to pay him, according to the National Police.
This individual requested a sum of money in exchange for employment, as he was responsible for interviewing potential employees, and a monthly payment of 100 euros to maintain his position and allocate manageable responsibilities.
According to the National Police, numerous victims who voluntarily evacuated the hotel as a result of the situation have informed officers about the harassment, while other employees have declined to testify for fear of being terminated.
