The sudden death of a 34-year-old man with cerebral palsy in a home in Elche has revealed the existence of a clandestine care centre for dependent persons that operates without any administrative authorisation. The building was sealed after the Local Police, in conjunction with the Catalan Police, intervened to confirm that it was lodging numerous individuals with disabilities in unsanitary conditions.
The Local Police Station of the National Police Force is currently conducting an investigation into the cause of the fatality, which prompted the alert. Officers discovered residents with intellectual disabilities, Down syndrome, autism, and other neurological conditions at the location, some of whom were in a particularly vulnerable state.

The home was functioning as a care facility without the requisite permits or compliance with legal requirements, as evidenced by inspections. Additionally, the facilities’ state did not ensure that the residents were provided with the bare minimum of hygiene and sanitation.
Elche Council has declared its intention to work in conjunction with regional and judicial authorities to ascertain the circumstances and guarantee the safety of those who were impacted. In the interim, the inhabitants have been directed to suitable care resources to guarantee their health.
