A 56-year-old man in Alicante has been arrested by the National Police on charges of aiding and abetting unlawful immigration. The individual was en route to Algeria to retrieve passports from his compatriots who had previously entered Spain by boat, according to the investigation.
The method of operation involved the transportation of newly issued documents without entry or departure stamps, which enabled their holders to appear to have entered the country legally.
In addition to accessing social assistance and public health care, immigrants could register in Spain, initiate regularisation procedures, and avoid expulsion with these passports.
Cash and police intervention
On his return to the port of Alicante, officers apprehended the suspect and confiscated €1,135 in cash, as well as a passport belonging to an Algerian citizen who had arrived by boat. The hypothesis that the suspect obtained income through this unlawful activity is further supported by the fact that he lacked any known employment or source of support.
The police operation is currently underway, and it is not impossible for additional arrests to be made in connection with this network, which facilitated unlawful immigration by fraudulently using passports.
