Police and judicial sources have said that a surgeon from Alicante has been arrested in connection with the death of his 94-year-old father from sepsis, which occurred after a home procedure to amputate several of his toes. After spending a few days with his relative for the August long weekend, the elderly man returned to his nursing home last weekend, where he normally resides. The incident took place there. When they arrived at the nursing home, they observed that the man was missing multiple toes and was wearing a bandage. The individual was admitted to Sant Joan Hospital last weekend, and his condition deteriorated substantially until his death from sepsis at Alicante General Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, August 19th.
According to the sources, the elderly man was experiencing circulatory issues and was beginning to develop gangrene in his feet. The amputation was performed by his son, a professional surgeon. The operation was conducted in an environment that was deficient in sanitation and was conducted at home. The amputation was conducted in the kitchen of the doctor’s private residence, rather than having him transported to a hospital or clinic, where the operation could have been done correctly. Additionally, two of the doctor’s teenage daughters, who are approximately 15 years old, were with him at the time. Consequently, both are considered minors. This milieu was significantly different from the conditions that would necessitate such an intervention, which ultimately resulted in an infection in the treated area. This was further exacerbated by the patient’s advanced age, which resulted in the rapid emergence of complications.
The nursing home’s initial response was to transfer the patient to the nearest hospital upon observing the patient’s alarming condition. At the time of the patient’s admission to the hospital, a relative arrived at the medical centre but declined to provide her name. The medical staff perceived this situation as suspicious, and the hospital promptly informed the Civil Guard. Nevertheless, the National Police ultimately assumed responsibility for the case, as the incident occurred within their jurisdiction. Initially, both forces initiated investigations to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the surgery and the state of the elderly man’s digits. According to sources consulted by this newspaper, the elderly man had three digits amputated on one foot and two more on the other. The investigation, which resulted in the identification of the relatives, determined that the patient’s own son could have performed the operation.
The elderly man’s condition was so severe that the physicians decided to transfer him to Alicante General Hospital, where they ultimately chose to administer sedation. The man was unable to surmount the irreversible damage that had already been caused by the infection. Ultimately, he passed away on Tuesday afternoon. The UDEV (Specialised and Violent Crime Unit) homicide officers promptly apprehended his son as the putative perpetrator of homicide and transported him to the police station. The 55-year-old physician who was arrested is employed as a cardiovascular surgeon at Alicante General Hospital. According to sources, his professional status as a physician could result in a charge of intentional intent, rather than negligence, leading to homicide. In other words, it is presumed that, as a result of his professional expertise, he was cognisant of the potential hazards associated with the operation he was conducting. The ultimate classification will be contingent upon the results of the judicial investigation.
The investigation will endeavour to ascertain the rationale behind the surgeon’s decision to perform a severe procedure independently, without the use of appropriate medical procedures. The decision resulted in a tragic outcome, which was an infection.
