Starting today, Monday, August 25th, Correos, the Post Office will temporarily prohibit the acceptance of packages with a commercial value of $800 (€681.50) or less that are intended for the United States or Puerto Rico. This decision is being made in response to the expiration of the “de minimis” regime.
The reason for this, as stated in a statement released on Friday, is the modification of US customs regulations. This modification eliminates the tariff exemption that was previously applicable to low-value incoming shipments. As a result, the Post Office will only accept these sorts of shipments until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, the 24th.
All merchandise shipments to the United States or Puerto Rico will be subject to tariffs starting on August 29, with rates that are contingent upon the value of the product and the country of origin.
DHL, a German corporation, “substantially” alters its procedures
The circumstance necessitates that Correos, along with all postal operators, including the German DHL, significantly alter its processes and enhance shipment controls to comply with the new regulatory requirements.
The public corporation has issued a warning that this will have a “significant” effect on the flow of e-commerce and international postal logistics.
Nevertheless, the acceptance of letters and documents of no commercial value, books, and gifts sent by individuals with a value of $100 (€85.2) or less will not be impacted in any way.
