The Guardia Civil has apprehended eight individuals from Madrid and Murcia, aged 29 to 41, for the purpose of spraying graffiti on Properties of Cultural Interest (BIC) in the mining highlands of Cartagena and La Unión, in the Region of Murcia.
The investigation, which is a component of Operation Cartatag and the Spanish Historical Heritage Defence Plan, commenced in February of last year when the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) was notified by the La Unión Local Police of the presence of numerous graffiti on elements that had been declared as BIC.
The graffiti is situated in a site that has been designated as a Historic Site in accordance with Decree 280/2015, dated October 7th. This designation encompasses a variety of mining elements and assets, including headframes, chimneys, furnaces, laundries, mining and metallurgical facilities, foundries, powder magazines, machinery, tunnels and transportation, crushing, or grinding facilities.

Guardia Civil from the Seprona (National Police) took command of the investigation, which was designed to identify the authors by examining the pseudonyms used to sign the drawings, which are referred to as “tags.”
The investigation resulted in the identification of eight individuals who have been apprehended as alleged perpetrators of the offence of damaging property of historical and cultural value, as defined in Articles 323 and 324 of the Penal Code.
The Armed Forces Institute has underscored that these graffiti not only incur a substantial economic burden on the public administration, but also have a detrimental impact on the heritage site. The removal of these graffiti necessitates the use of harsh chemicals and paint strippers, which can deteriorate the property’s original condition.
