A 49-year-old physician has been arrested by Guardia Civil officers on suspicion of recording patients during medical examinations at the centre where he practiced without their consent. The detainee has been brought before a court on suspicion of continuing the crime of discovery and disclosure of secrets.
The investigation commenced in early July following the receipt of an anonymous complaint from a healthcare centre employee in the province of Alicante. The institute stated in a statement that the worker claimed to have observed the doctor using a recording device concealed as a vehicle key to attempt to capture images of a patient.
The San Juan Territorial Judicial Police Team assumed responsibility for the investigation and initiated an operation to ascertain the facts and apprehend the alleged perpetrator, in light of the gravity of the situation.
The doctor was apprehended by law enforcement officers while en route to his place of employment on August 11th. Two spy-type devices, which were also designed to capture images and resembled vehicle keys, were seized at that time.
Subsequently, a search was conducted at his residence, resulting in the seizure of a substantial quantity of computer equipment and three new recording devices with comparable specifications.
The entire contents are being analysed by officers in order to identify potential victims. Two have been located thus far, although investigators are not ruling out the possibility that the number could be higher, as “there are indications that the detainee could have been committing these acts for at least three years.”
The Alicante Judicial District Court ordered the detainee’s release on parole after he was brought before the court with the seized belongings, despite the fact that he has no prior record of similar offences.
