Elche Council finished building 382 niches in the new cemetery, San Agatángelo. This is part of the local government’s plan to make the cemetery bigger and better accessible, and to offer more services.
Claudio Guilabert, the councillor for public spaces and services, said that the project, which cost about €800,000, included building 382 simple niches next to the road that leads into the cemetery. These were in addition to the 32 niches that were already there in the summer of 2024, for a total of 414 niches. “Our goal is to improve the infrastructure of municipal cemeteries.”
As part of the work, the old, broken fences was replaced with niche blocks that were built to look like the trees that were already there. This makes it possible to build three- or four-story blocks with four to six premade concrete niches on each floor. Accessibility has been improved as a result of this work. For example, asphalt paving and the building of two concrete stairs in the roundabout area have been done.
Claudio Guilabert, the councillor for the area, says the goal is to improve the facilities of the municipal cemeteries.
He also said that in the next few months, bids will start for 2,000 new niches that will be used to finish two blocks of the old cemetery, the Virgen de la Asunción, and surround the new cemetery.
Guilabert also said that more work is going to be done on the two cemeteries in the town. For example, at the Virgen de la Asunción cemetery, a new ossuary is being built, and the lighting will be improved.
In this way, he said, “it’s about recovering and enhancing this cemetery of great artistic and cultural value so that it becomes a benchmark in funerary art .”
