A 31-year-old Spanish driver from Elche turned himself in to the police five days after hitting a cyclist on a regional highway and driving off, even though the cyclist was in badly injured.
Sources engaged in the investigation havesaid that the cyclist was in the hospital for two weeks with significant injuries. He is now better and was released from the Elche General University Hospital last weekend.
The Guardia Civil says that the accident happened on August 9th at kilometre 13.020 of the CV-86, when a car hit a bicycle and the driver ran away.
A passerby helped the rider at first, and then an ambulance took him to Elche General Hospital.
The Traffic Investigation and Analysis Group (GIAT) of the Alicante Traffic Subsector looked at the state of the bicycle and the debris from the car that was involved in the collision. They also did a thorough visual investigation and watched a lot of surveillance cameras. They also went to garages and scrapyards to look for possible repairs that could be made to the hit-and-run car.
The Guardia Civil said that the media and social media coverage of the tragedy brought in new evidence. Along with a lot of hard work by the police, this led the suspect to turn himself in and confess on the 14th.
The damage to the car was checked out, and it matched what would have happened in the crash. The Elche court is handling the case against the motorist, who was arrested and charged with gross negligent harm and abandoning the scene of the accident.
