Three men, aged 22 to 26, were arrested by the National Police in Alicante. They are being charged with fraud and cashing fake notes after reportedly trying to pay 850 euros for a high-end bottle of champagne in a leisure area of the capital city.
In a statement, the police force said that the people who were held after investigations had been sent to the city’s Duty Court.
National Police officers started the investigation by arresting a man in a leisure area of Alicante. The man was accused of theft and counterfeiting currency because he was trying to pay for the expensive bottle with fake notes.
The suspect was also caught with 18 fake 50-euro notes. At first look, they seemed to have all the right security features, but they all had the same number on them, which was a “clear sign” that they weren’t real.
After the initial arrest, police started an investigation. First, the banknotes were proven to be fake after being examined by experts from the Bank of Spain’s Investigation Brigade (BIBE), who called them a “dangerous counterfeit” because of how good they were.
After that, police did a number of checks to see if the suspect or anyone else involved had used more notes in the area. They found out that there was another man with the detainee at the time of the event. He asked him to give him the wallet where the fake money was kept so that police wouldn’t find it when they caught him. The same crimes got this second man arrested as well.
During the investigation, police also found a third suspect: a man who bought a car from the second suspect and paid him €1,000 in fake €50 bills. This person and the first suspect are said to have used these notes to buy drink in an Alicante recreation area. This third suspect was finally caught and taken into custody.
