The municipality of Agost (Alicante) is shocked by the terrible death of a 25-year-old man who had been besieged inside his home since early Wednesday morning, August 27th. According to À Punt, the young man committed suicide on Thursday with a shotgun blast inside his residence on Calle Fermín Sánchez.
The alarm was raised the night before when it was discovered that he had barricaded himself inside his home and refused to leave. Since then, Guardia Civil mediators, specialised psychologists, and family members have repeatedly attempted to persuade him to quit his behaviour and hand over his weapons.
For more than 30 hours, the street was cordoned off and blocked to traffic to guarantee safety. Despite the young man’s threats to shoot anyone who entered, no hostages or injuries were reported. We reported this morning that he continued to resist and was stuck inside his home, but the awful ending has now been verified.
A potential psychotic breakout as a trigger
According to À Punt, Agost mayor Juanjo Castelló stated that the young guy experienced “a psychotic episode that destabilised his mind.” He said that he barricaded himself “out of fear that someone would hurt him,” even though there were no prior threats or personal issues.
The young man came from a family that was well-known in town for its hunting activities, which explains why they lawfully owned multiple shotguns. One of them was used to end his life.
Residents were devastated by the unfortunate conclusion, and they closely monitored every step of the Guardia Civil operation. The mayor expressed his condolences to the family and emphasised that the authorities’ top objective was always to end the issue with no casualties.
