Benidorm has suffered another tragedy on its beaches. On Thursday afternoon, August 28th, a 31-year-old British tourist died on Levante Beach, one of Alicante’s busiest. According to the National Police, the man was discovered dead after many unsuccessful rescue attempts.
The incident happened about 8:00 p.m., when the man entered the sea with two other people. His friends were able to return to land, but he became stranded in the waves and drifted away from the shoreline. Several people attempted to assist him without success.
According to police sources, the lifeguards were not on duty at the time, complicating the rescue operation. The Guardia Civil and Maritime Rescue were called in to assist with the search, but the tourist’s lifeless body was eventually discovered on the sand.
Witnesses described tense circumstances on the beach, with scores of bathers and locals congregating around the police operation. “The sea was very rough, and even at ankle height, you could feel the force of the waves,” said a British visitor who had been in the area a few days before.
The National Police have launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances, although everything leads to an unintentional drowning. The Benidorm Council stated that “it appears the man entered the sea and was unable to get out.”
This is not the first recent example in the city; in recent months, other British tourists have died in Benidorm in a variety of circumstances, raising fears among locals and frequent visitors.
