A man has been sentenced to prison for kidnapping, assaulting, burning, and threatening another man in Alicante in order to collect a debt. He was also put to prison for narcotics trafficking.
The Third Section of the Alicante Provincial Court convicted him, along with two other defendants, of attacking the victim when she went to the defendant’s home in 2020 and was punched and kicked during an altercation over a financial debt.
They then tied him up with plastic ties, immobilising him and preventing him from escaping.
According to the judgement, one of the defendants took a butterfly knife and threatened to force him to pay the money he allegedly owed. In addition, another defendant burned his hand with fire-heated scissors.
Unsatisfied, they requested that the victim call her father, an Italian resident, and transfer 3,000 euros to the defendants’ allocated credit card.
They also grabbed his personal documents, credit cards, and two moblel phones, vowing to restore them only after obtaining payment. The victim complied and contacted his father to request the deposit, but was unable to do so because he did not have his card with him at the time.
They let him leave the house about 8:15 p.m. the same day, but they kept his things and moble phones—conditioning his return on the desired payment—and even gave him a bank account to deposit them to.
The following day, in response to complaints and court orders, the police searched the home and discovered: scissors with burnt tips, a butterfly knife, twelve plastic ties, the victim’s personal documents, and, in a cardboard box, various drugs: 0.39 grammes of cocaine, 5.75 grammes of MDMA, 51.62 grammes of hashish, and 111.81 grammes of cannabis, as well as 215 euros in cash from their sale.
The complainant experienced a first-degree burn, a hand injury, and muscular soreness in both hands, which took eight days to heal. He died before the trial could be held, but his civil rights were saved for his heir.
During the trial, the defendant completely admitted the facts and agreed to the charges.
The punishments imposed were one year and six months in prison, with the loss of the right to vote during that period owing to kidnapping.
Drug trafficking carries a three-month prison sentence, a particular disqualification, and a €200 fine.
Minor injuries carry a 20-day fine of €3 per day. The victim’s father and the other two guilty offenders have been awarded €320 in compensation.
