A spate of fires affecting both vehicles and trees interrupted the tranquillity of Elche’s La Marina region on Monday night. The rapid response of local police and the cooperation of citizens resulted in the arrest of a guy suspected of starting the flames.
The initial call to emergency services came from a neighbour who reported a burning automobile. Minutes later, another vehicle caught fire on Avenida AlegrÃa, and the flames extended to the cemetery path, burning several pine trees and plants. Elche firefighters rushed to the scene to extinguish the numerous fires.
According to police sources, multiple witnesses confirmed the suspect’s description. Officers organised a search of the cemetery area using this information and working with the San Fulgencio Local Police. They found the man, who had signs of fire on his hands. He was arrested and transported to the Civil Guard for further investigation.
Emergency services also reported a significant discovery in the affected vehicles: flammable material debris was discovered beneath the wheels, supporting the theory that the fires were purposefully caused.
The fires left a bleak aftermath for people who witnessed as the blaze spread in minutes. “It could have been a lot worse if the wind had changed direction,” one local neighbour said early this morning.
This episode has once again demonstrated the need of law enforcement coordination and civilian collaboration. Both helped to keep the flames under control and apprehend the suspected arsonist before he could cause further damage.
