Christmas lights arrive in Alicante around the middle of September. To avoid a repeat of the 2019 catastrophe, the City Council has accelerated the installation of the lights in recent years, with the goal of having them operational by the end of the calendar year. This service will have the greatest budget in history, at over €580,000 per year.
Iluminaciones Ximénez, the sector’s biggest company, was the only one interested in participating in the public offer, thus it will continue to manage a contract won five years ago in 2020. Last August, the company’s employees began electrical pre-installation work to ensure that everything was set for the arrival of the decorations. Workers began hanging the first light bulbs yesterday, Thursday September 11th, particularly around the Plaza de los Luceros.
Following recent projects such as the nativity scene and enormous angels, Alicante City Council confirmed its commitment to transforming the city into a Christmas-themed destination with the lighting contract. In March, the municipal council decided to increase spending in this region, pledging that it would not only improve the quality of the decorations but would also expand to include other streets.
As a result, the new contract called for a total budget of 2.1 million euros until 2028, which was reduced to 1.74 million with the offer from Ximénez, who has worked in cities such as New York, Moscow, and Madrid, as well as triumphing in Vigo, which has long been regarded as Spain’s Christmas capital.
