After being hit by a parked, unmanned automobile on Sunday afternoon, September 14th, in Calpe, Alicante, a baby died and her 37-year-old mother remains at Dénia Hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) with a reserved prognosis.
The Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU) stated that it received notification of the incident at 7:40 p.m., at which point it dispatched an ambulance from the Emergency Medical Assistance Service (SAMU) and another from Basic Life Support (BLS), as well as a primary care medical team.
Medical personnel treated the 37-year-old woman and her child for multiple injuries before transporting them to Denia Hospital. According to health department authorities, the baby died while in the ICU, and her mother is still in the ICU with a reserved prognosis.
Calpe’s Security Councillor, Guillermo Sendra, explained that the Local Police are attempting to determine what happened, and that one of the lines of investigation is focused on determining whether the vehicle’s handbrake was on or if it was not sufficiently engaged and could have failed, causing the car to run over these two people on a “very steep” slope, though definitive conclusions will have to wait.
Sendra claimed that the accident of the woman and her infant, who died, has been a “drama” for the municipality and that the entire population is “saddened” by the incident. He also stated that the council intends to designate three days of public mourning and hopes that the baby’s mother, who was admitted in bad condition with a reserved prognosis in Dénia Hospital’s ICU, would recover.
