A 53 year old man attacked a coworker with a hammer in the washing area of the Carrefour hypermarket in Sant Joan before slashing his own neck in the car park.
The two injured were transferred to a hospital, where the 53 year old died.
According to people familiar with the case, the incident occurred yesterday morning, Wednesday September 17th, when a man struck another man in the head with a blunt weapon in the laundry room, reportedly as a result of a work-related quarrel.
He then took out a knife and began wandering about the car park, which is near a mechanic’s shop, a gas station, and a huge retail centre, while cutting his own throat.
“The closer they got, the more stabs he gave,” one eyewitness recalls
A nurse who had parked his car in the garage and a security officer who was going to the store to buy groceries noticed the man and approached him to try to stop him from self-harming. “The closer they got, the more he stabbed himself in the neck,” an eyewitness claimed.
There were moments of uncertainty since one of them was carrying a stick and attempting to hit the assailant in the hand to force him to drop the knife, leading some customers and employees to believe there was a fight.
Trail of Blood
Finally, after roaming around the car park near the car wash and bleeding profusely, the man fainted in a corner beside a mimosa tree. At that point, the nurse requested gauze or tissue to seal the incisions on his neck.
The Sant Joan d’Alacant Local Police were the first to arrive on the site. A Basic Life Support ambulance and a SAMU unit subsequently treated the two injured patients before transporting them to the hospital where the orginal attacker died.
The Guardia Civil has taken command of the inquiry.
