Antonio Morales Ayala, a 70-year-old cyclist, died in a sad accident on Vereda del Reino, the road that connects the municipalities of Orihuela (Alicante) and Beniel (Murcia). He lost control of his bike and collided into a pole at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 10th.
Because of the incident’s precise location on the boundary between two independent communities, sophisticated emergency management was required. The nearest ambulance was in Beniel, only three minutes away, but a unit from Orihuela was eventually dispatched and arrived 47 minutes later. Confusion over which agency was meant to react slowed treatment, and the ambulance deployed was merely for transportation, with no medical personnel on board—just the driver and assistant.
During the operation, the emergency vehicle had trouble pinpointing the exact position of the collision, prompting the Orihuela Local Police to aid in locating and transporting the injured person. The rider was finally transported to Vega Baja Hospital, where he died from cardiac arrest some hours later.
The Orihuela Local Police have launched a report to investigate both the circumstances surrounding the fall and the conduct of the health services. Health authorities in the Valencian Community and Murcia have launched investigations to determine what happened.
Grandfather to three players
Antonio Morales Ayala was a former Murcia firefighter who had over forty years of service and was well-liked by his colleagues. He was an avid cyclist and a die-hard football lover. The EFMurciapromesas club, which he sponsored and where three of his grandchildren—Izan, Alex, and David—play, expressed their condolences, emphasising his love of sports and role model.
Antonio’s family has stated that they intend to seek accountability for health care administration.
