The Orihuela City Council’s Infrastructure and Coastal Departments are implementing significant road safety enhancements between Villamartín and San Miguel in the Orihuela Costa region. The €383,982.97 initiative addresses a long-standing desire among local inhabitants. The project is co-financed by the Alicante Provincial Council’s Planifica 2023 Plan, which will contribute 45% of the investment (€172,792.34), with the Orihuela City Council taking on the remaining 55%.
The project, which is expected to take four months to complete, includes complete road repaving, the creation of a central median strip with pedestrian crossings, traffic flow reorganisation, the improvement of deteriorated sidewalks and the installation of new horizontal and vertical signage, including safety lighting systems.
The purpose is to provide vehicles and pedestrians with safer and more accessible access to one of Orihuela Costa’s principal roadways, where excessive traffic necessitates immediate action.
The specifications also include a list of optional improvements that bidding companies can provide, such as installing LED lighting at pedestrian crossings, replacing streetlights with more efficient fixtures, adapting accessible bus stops, and installing educational radar lights to increase driver awareness.
Víctor Valverde, Councillor for Infrastructure, stated that the initiative addresses a long-standing need from Orihuela Costa residents for a solution to their congested roads. This is an investment that will benefit not only safety but also the quality of life for individuals who live and travel in the area.”
