National Police officers in Alicante arrested two males, aged 31 and 54, for faking a cheque from a Crevillent school’s Parents’ Association (AMPA) and cashing it at an Alicante bank. The loss to the school association is €800.
The president and secretary of the local Parents’ Association (AMPA) reported the occurrences to the Crevillent Civil Guard Station. After analysing the association’s accounts, they discovered that an 800-euro bearer cheque had been cashed at an Alicante bank.
The complainants, ignorant of who could have cashed the cheque because they were the only ones authorised, asked the bank for a copy of the document.
This allowed them to see that the president’s signature had been forged and that the handwriting on the document did not match that of the secretary, who is typically in charge of doing so.
The payment document related to a 2021 chequebook, and they had no idea when the fraudster received it because they had never detected the missing chequebook and generally keep them locked up.
Following the complaint, and considering that the cheque was paid at an Alicante bank, the National Police launched an inquiry. The investigation was led by investigators from the Alicante Northern District Police Station.
Investigators tracked down the individual who paid the cheque at the bank: a man who said in his police statement that a buddy had given him the cheque to cash, but that he couldn’t since he didn’t have a bank account there. After cashing the cheque, he met with his friend and handed him the money.
Finally, after numerous investigations, the agents identified the alleged perpetrator of the payment document forgery.
For all of these reasons, the National Police detained two men for alleged fraud, document falsification, and impersonation of civil status. All actions have been referred to the Alicante Investigating Court.
