The Guardia Civil of the Region of Murcia, in partnership with the Ulea Local Police, conducted an operation that resulted in the investigation of the owner of a dog, who died of an illness for which he did not receive veterinary treatment, as the accused perpetrator of animal cruelty.
According to Guardia Civil , the operation began when the Guardia Civil ‘s Nature Protection Service conducted an inspection at a company in Ulea that deals with end-of-life cars.
The Guardia Civil discovered an injured American Bully dog within a walled metal-roofed enclosure. A closer look revealed difficulty walking, extensive scaling in multiple regions of its skin, and oozing sores on its ears.
The enclosure was also filthy and lacked proper hygiene, which was especially concerning given that the animal appeared to be sick.
The dog got first emergency veterinary care in coordination with the City Council’s Municipal Services and the Ulea Local Police, and its injuries were confirmed to be leishmaniasis-related.
Canine leishmaniasis is a dangerous, potentially fatal parasitic disease caused by the parasite Leishmania infantum. It is primarily transmitted through insect bites and causes a wide range of symptoms, including hair loss, skin sores, fever, and weight loss. This disease necessitates regular veterinary visits.
According to the study, this animal received no veterinary care or attention targeted at preventing suffering.
Despite receiving veterinary treatment, which its owner had not previously provided, the animal’s condition worsened, and attempts to recover it failed, and it died.
The dog lacked access to the veterinary care and assistance needed to alleviate its condition, cure its pathologies, and restore its well-being and health.
The owner was probed for possible animal mistreatment. Furthermore, SEPRONA filed accusations alleging violations of Law 50/1999, dated December 23, on the Legal Regime for the Ownership of Potentially Dangerous Animals, and Law 7/2023, dated March 28, on the Protection of Animal Rights and Welfare.
