The Interior Ministry plans to increase the Civil Guard force in Finestrat. The Mayor, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, made this announcement during a plenary session in response to queries from the Socialist Municipal Group. This news, however, contrasts dramatically with the scenario in which they work on a daily basis, since they are still waiting for their new facilities to be created, despite the fact that they provide services from municipal premises, despite being under to the Interior Ministry’s jurisdiction.
The Mayor stated that he was notified about the personnel augmentation in recent days, but did not disclose the number. “Just as I am critical of the Minister of the Interior, I want to give you some positive news I received last week: they are going to increase the number of Civil Guards in the town, despite not having a barracks,” commented a member of the Popular Party.
Thus, he noted that the Corps is still working on a municipal building and has been waiting for this new infrastructure to be completed for years. This building once again set the PP and PSOE against each other during the plenary session, with both blaming the other. The problem, according to the PP, is that the central government failed to include the Finestrat project in the state construction plan, whereas the Socialists blame the stalemate on the local government’s refusal to allocate 300,000 euros.
The Mayor said that allocating this sum takes only 30 minutes after signing a proclamation. As a result, he delegated responsibility for the initial step towards implementation to the Interior Ministry. That is, when they see the Finestrat project in the upcoming General State Budget or development plans, they will act. Thus, he contended that providing these 300,000 euros would limit the City Council’s investment capacity in other projects that have a chance of succeeding throughout the budget’s execution.
Furthermore, Pérez Llorca stated unequivocally that the municipality’s absence of a barracks is owing to the Spanish government’s lack of interest.
The Civil Guard barracks in Finestrat have been planned since at least 2007, when the municipal council, then led by the PP, unanimously endorsed a pledge to give a buildable plot of land near the municipality’s entry. In 2022, the City Council reached a deal with the Ministry of the Interior under which they agreed to invest €300,000 and relocate the land to the L’Alcasser neighbourhood. In exchange, the Ministry would have to start building within two years. A period of months later would be extended to four years, with the project being completed in 2026.
