The National Police and the Alicante Port Authority quickly intervened and effectively to save the life of a woman who was recovered unconscious from the ocean at Pier 8 in the Port of Alicante.
CIMACC Room 091 sent a dispatch from the Provincial Citizen Security Brigade to the Port of Alicante after learning that a woman had leaped into the water with suicide intent. When the police arrived, they found a private security guard, a Port Authority police officer, and a citizen who had already interfered to take her out of the water and assist her.
Rescue and resuscitation manoeuvres
The woman was unconscious, with no breathing or pulse. Responders placed her in the proper posture and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), while also prepping a semi-automatic external defibrillator (AED). Officers from the National Police and Port Authority set up a relay system, with resuscitation manoeuvres switching every two minutes.
After a few cycles, the victim expelled water and regained vital signs. The officers were able to keep her alive until the ambulance arrived, and its paramedics acknowledged that their efforts had been decisive.
During the operation, a security perimeter was erected to allow for medical intervention. The woman was brought to Alicante General Hospital with a cautious prognosis and kept under surveillance. She spent around five minutes unconscious in the water before being released days later in good physical shape and with no aftereffects.
